Home Safety Project

Unintentional accidents are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in Palestinian children 1-4 years old, accounting for at least 27.7% of all deaths ref UNICEF 2010 ß link to: http://www.unicef.org/oPt/PALESTINIAN_SITAN-final.pdf. As a public health organization dedicated to improving the health of its citizens we embarked on addressing the need to create home safety awareness and educate all sectors of the population. We are focusing on informing and educating policy makers, professionals and civilians with a special focus on youth and their parents.

The main topics we cover in our lectures and workshops, and brochures are:

  • Falls
  • Burns
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Drowning
  • Cuts

Our accomplishments in the field of HOME SAFETY include training two groups of community educators; producing a booklets, leaflets, flyers and rulers indicating the safe distances for bars on cots, stairs railings and depth of sand on playgrounds. In addition, our publications list local emergency telephone numbers.

PFS has also participated in research examining the types of childhood injuries, the risk factors and the barriers to preventing injuries.
