Hope and Giving: My Journey as a Breast Cancer Survivor
I am Nawal Shammas, a grandmother to 27 beautiful children, and I am in my 70s. 2010 life took an unexpected turn when I received a breast cancer diagnosis. But let me tell you, I didn’t let that define me. Instead, I became a symbol of hope and resilience, inspiring those around me with my unwavering spirit.
It all started when I met Dr. Carol Jabari for the first time at Hebron University. She recommended I undergo mammography at Jerusalem’s Patient’s Friends Society. Trusting my instincts, I followed her advice and headed to the hospital.
With determination and the support of my loved ones, I emerged victorious against breast cancer. But my journey didn’t end there. I wanted to make the most of my second chance at life, so my activities have increased.
Meanwhile, I discovered the Baytna Center in Hebron, where I actively participate in activities such as aerobics, health education lectures, and outings. Embracing a holistic approach to my well-being, I not only focused on physical recovery but also on nurturing my mind and soul.
In my eyes, beating cancer wasn’t the only battle I fought. I also triumphed over the challenges posed by the occupation. My indomitable spirit and refusal to succumb to adversity became a source of inspiration for others. Beyond my journey, I wanted to make a difference in the lives of those around me. I encouraged my son, who was injured during the Intifada and now lives with an 85.7% disability, to pursue his dreams of becoming a lawyer. Today, he helps others through his legal expertise.
I am Nawal Shammas, and my story embodies the power of hope and giving. I want to remind you that even in the face of adversity, there is strength to be found and the ability to inspire others to rise above their challenges.
I hope that my story can give some value and inspiration to you in the challenges you may find, while too much best wishes I hope for you.
